January 1, 2012… a new year… a time for new beginnings.  I have selected the image below for my first post of the new year.  It represented a new beginning for the millions of immigrants who came to the United States seeking a better life than the one they had left behind.

Located on Ellis Island, in New York Harbor, the Ellis Island Immigration Station opened on January 1, 1892.

  
 
The first immigrant to pass through Ellis Island was Annie Moore, a teenage girl from Cork, Ireland, who arrived on the ship Nevada on January 1, 1892, on her 15th birthday.
